Parliament Week
Our school celebrated Parliament Week, providing children with exciting opportunities to develop their understanding of democracy, leadership and how their voices can be heard. This event forms an important part of our school improvement focus, supporting pupils’ personal development, oracy and understanding of British values. Through discussion, debate and real-life experiences, pupils were encouraged to express their opinions confidently, listen respectfully to others and understand the role they can play in society.
The week began with our first ever Parliament Week assembly, led brilliantly by our School Council. They explained the history of Parliament, how it is structured today, and how children can actively participate and make a difference. It was inspiring to see pupils take a leadership role in sharing knowledge and encouraging others to engage in civic learning.
As part of the week’s activities, we welcomed Councillor Tim Ashton from Lancashire County Council into school. He led an engaging talk with Year 5, answered thoughtful questions and shared his experiences of local government. Councillor Ashton also toured the school with our Junior Leaders and recorded a podcast with our Podcast Squad, giving pupils first-hand insight into civic leadership and communication.
Learning extended beyond the classroom into lunchtime play, where children enjoyed a Parliament-themed treasure hunt around the school grounds and created Parliament crafts, combining creativity with learning about government and democracy.
We were also honoured to welcome Deputy Lieutenant Cam, who was given a school tour by our Junior Leaders, recorded a podcast with pupils and led an informative whole-school assembly. He explained his role and how it supports both the local community and wider society, giving pupils valuable insight into civic responsibility.
Throughout Parliament Week, pupils across all classes took part in class debates on a wide range of topics, developing their speaking, listening and reasoning skills. They practised expressing opinions clearly, considering different viewpoints and understanding the importance of respectful discussion and compromise.
Parliament Week provided a rich opportunity for pupils to strengthen key skills, build confidence and deepen their cultural capital, helping them to understand how democracy works in practice and recognising that their voices truly matter. We were extremely proud of the enthusiasm, curiosity and leadership shown by all our pupils.
